Health And Safety Policy

Elephant and Castle Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy

Elephant and Castle Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services in a way that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with carpet cleaning, floor care and related services carried out in residential, commercial and communal premises.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety considerations are integrated into all aspects of our work, from planning each job to the completion of cleaning tasks and leaving the site safe and tidy. Every employee is expected to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.

Roles and Responsibilities

The management of Elephant and Castle Carpet Cleaning has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed regularly. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for communicating safe working procedures, checking that staff follow them, and reporting any defects or concerns. All employees must cooperate with management on health and safety matters, follow training and instructions, use equipment properly and immediately report hazards, incidents or near misses.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before beginning any job, a risk assessment is carried out to identify potential hazards including slips, trips and falls, manual handling, electrical risks, chemical exposure and fire safety. Where necessary, we adapt our methods to suit the specific layout and condition of the premises. We maintain written procedures for common tasks such as hot water extraction cleaning, low-moisture cleaning, stain treatment and deodorising. These procedures are reviewed and updated as equipment or products change.

Use and Storage of Cleaning Chemicals

We only use cleaning agents and stain treatments that are appropriate for professional carpet and upholstery cleaning and that comply with current safety and environmental requirements. All products are used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data sheets. Chemicals are labelled clearly and stored securely when transported and when on site, kept away from children, pets, food areas and sources of heat or ignition. Staff are trained in correct dilution, application and rinsing methods to minimise residues and reduce the risk of skin, eye or respiratory irritation.

Personal Protective Equipment PPE

Where risk assessment shows that additional protection is required, staff are provided with suitable personal protective equipment. This may include gloves, masks or respirators, eye protection and protective footwear. Employees receive guidance on how and when PPE must be worn, how to adjust it for a safe fit and how to maintain or dispose of it appropriately. PPE is regarded as a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe systems of work and engineering controls.

Equipment Safety and Electrical Controls

We ensure that all carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, hoses, wands and other tools are fit for purpose, regularly inspected and maintained according to manufacturer recommendations. Electrical equipment is checked for damage to cables, plugs and casings before use. Extension leads are kept to a minimum length, routed to avoid doorways and walkways where possible, and never overloaded. Staff are instructed never to use electrical equipment with wet hands, on visibly damaged sockets or in areas where water is likely to cause a hazard.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Carpet cleaning often involves moving hoses, machinery and furniture. To reduce the risk of strains and sprains, employees receive training in safe lifting techniques, team lifting and the use of handling aids where available. Whenever possible, heavier items are moved with assistance or worked around safely. Work is planned so that staff avoid unnecessary bending, twisting and overreaching. Breaks and task rotation are encouraged to prevent overexertion.

Slips, Trips and Site Housekeeping

During cleaning, we recognise that wet surfaces, hoses and tools can create potential slip or trip hazards. Our teams place warning signs in prominent positions where carpets, rugs or hard floors are damp or where cables cross walkways. We keep work areas as tidy as practicable, coiling hoses when not in use and wiping up spills promptly. On completion of the job, we check that all equipment and waste have been removed and that the area is left as safe as possible for occupants and visitors.

Client and Public Safety

We take care to protect clients, their families, staff and visitors throughout the cleaning process. Wherever practical, we agree in advance which areas will be treated and how access will be managed. Customers are advised to keep children and pets away from working areas and drying carpets. We explain approximate drying times and provide guidance on safe re-entry, furniture replacement and ventilation. Any remaining hazards are clearly highlighted before we leave the premises.

Training, Communication and Supervision

All employees receive induction training covering core health and safety requirements, safe use of equipment and chemicals, emergency procedures and reporting lines. Additional task-specific training is provided where needed and refreshed periodically. Supervisors monitor working practices, provide on-the-job coaching and address any unsafe behaviours. Health and safety information is communicated in clear language and employees are encouraged to raise questions or suggest improvements.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to management. An internal record is kept and, where necessary, corrective actions are identified and implemented. Our emergency procedures include steps to take in case of fire, serious injury, chemical spills or electrical incidents. Staff are trained to know when to stop work, when to evacuate and how to contact emergency services from client premises.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant to our services, locations and methods of work. We monitor performance through incident reports, staff feedback, client comments and site checks. Where improvements can be made, we revise our procedures and provide additional training or equipment as required. By maintaining high standards of health and safety, Elephant and Castle Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver reliable, professional results while protecting everyone involved in or affected by our work.
